Spilling The “Details”

WhatsApp’s recent announcement regarding the ability to edit messages brings it in line with competitors such as Telegram and Discord. This new feature allows users to edit their messages within a 15-minute window after sending them. Now, you can also send blank message on WhatsApp and can make the text appear within a span of 15 minutes. WhatsApp, which is owned by Meta (formerly Facebook), plans to roll out this feature to its 2 billion users in the coming weeks. Notably, India is WhatsApp’s largest market, with 487 million users.

In a blog post, WhatsApp expressed excitement about giving users more control over their chats, enabling them to correct simple misspellings or add extra context to their messages. To edit a message, users can long-press on the sent message and choose the “Edit” option from the menu within the specified time frame. Edited messages will be labeled as “edited” to inform recipients that changes have been made, although the specific edits themselves will not be displayed.

This move by WhatsApp follows the introduction of the editing feature by other messaging services like Telegram and Signal. Facebook, the parent company of WhatsApp, introduced a similar edit function nearly a decade ago, which includes a history of edits for users to review. Twitter also announced the ability for paying subscribers to edit tweets within a 30-minute window, aiming to make tweeting feel more approachable and less stressful.
